Pre-Moot in Focus

Belgrade Open Pre-Moot: Supporting the Next Generation of Arbitration Professionals

With the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot approaching, Belgrade once again hosted a series of events dedicated to young legal talents. Over the weekend, the XVIII DIS/Belgrade Open Pre-Moot took place, organised by the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law, providing law students with an opportunity to develop their arbitration skills in an international setting.

As one of the largest and longest-running Pre-Moots globally, the Belgrade Open Pre-Moot traditionally gathers teams and practitioners from across jurisdictions, offering participants valuable exposure to real-life arbitration scenarios and diverse advocacy styles.

As part of the programme, our colleagues were actively involved across two consecutive days. On Friday, 20 March, our Senior Associate Filip Šušulić chaired a panel at the Belgrade Arbitration Conference, engaging in discussion related to the current issues and hot topics related to costs in arbitration (third party funding, new models of billing, security for costs and many more).

This was followed on Saturday, 21 March, by the conference with the topic of “Curating Arbitration: Securing the Mandate, Shaping the Narrative and Staging the Client’s Case”, organised by the Under 40 Arbitration Association (part of Arbitration Association) and DIS40 (the young practitioners’ organisation of the German Arbitration Institute – DIS), both of which bring together early-career arbitration professionals and support their development in the field, where our Senior Associate Milica Volarev supported the organisation of the event as a co-chair of the Under 40 Arbitration Association.

In addition to the formal programme, the Pre-Moot once again created space for informal networking and community-building. On Friday night, we hosted a Pre-Moot Opening night in our premises, welcoming arbitrators and coaches from all over the world. On Saturday evening, Karanovic & Partners and Baker McKenzie traditionally hosted a dinner for speakers and friends, continuing a long-standing practice of fostering professional connections within the arbitration community.

Throughout the weekend, teams from around the world participated in hearing rounds, exchanging arguments and refining their skills ahead of the final competition rounds in Vienna.

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting young talent and the development of arbitration practice in the region, we are proud to continue supporting the Belgrade Open Pre-Moot and the broader programme of events surrounding it.
