Insights from ELG Conference

Karanović & Partners at the Energy Law Group Conference in London

Our Partner Petar Mitrović spoke at the “Energy Transition Investment Conference 2025”, held in London on 16 and 17 October.

The event was organised by the Energy Law Group (ELG), the most extensive network of energy experts across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond, together with international law firm and ELG member Slaughter and May. It brought together energy industry professionals from more than 60 countries, offering an opportunity to engage with leading experts and explore the global energy field.

Petar chaired the panel entitled “Financing Renewables – New Frontiers”, joined by George Gkiaouris (EBRD), Fathima Hussain (Standard Chartered), Tim Sheahan (Alcazar Energy), Rasmus Fahlén (Hammarskiöld), and Niamh McGovern (Arthur Cox).

The panel explored how mobilising sustainable capital remains the key to accelerating the transition, while renewable financing continues to face well-known obstacles, from political uncertainty and grid underinvestment to complex permitting and volatile markets. Speakers discussed how governments, investors, and development finance institutions can collaborate to de-risk green investments and crowd in private capital across both Europe and Africa.

Discussions also covered a wide range of perspectives: from the EBRD’s role in scaling green finance in South East Europe, to investment barriers in Sub-Saharan Africa, the impact of the EU electricity market reform, and the growing role of corporate PPAs and storage solutions in making renewable projects bankable.

The discussion also provided an opportunity to spotlight the Western Balkans and the region’s progress in renewable-energy financing and regulatory development.

We extend our gratitude to the organisers for such an insightful event and for fostering continued dialogue on the future of sustainable energy.
