North Macedonia Project Update

High-Speed Railway on Corridor X in North Macedonia – Construction Expected by End of 2026 or Early 2027

The Government of North Macedonia has announced that the feasibility study for the proposed high-speed railway on Corridor X has been completed and is currently under review. Groundbreaking is expected by the end of 2026 or in early 2027. During the summer, the Government intends to finalise arrangements with the project’s financier and conduct a competitive dialogue with prospective contractors. The project is expected to be implemented under the Strategic Partnership Agreement between North Macedonia and the United Kingdom.

According to previous government announcements, the project is for the modernisation of the Corridor X railway connecting Tabanovce and Gevgelija and is expected to be financed through the UK-North Macedonia Strategic Partnership framework, including access to UK Export Finance support. The precise financing structure and procurement arrangements are expected to become clearer as the competitive dialogue progresses.

Parties considering involvement – whether contractors, subcontractors, lenders, suppliers, or investors may wish to begin reviewing the anticipated procurement framework, financing structures, and applicable regulatory requirements in preparation for the forthcoming procurement process. Relevant considerations may include infrastructure procurement, FIDIC-based construction contracts, project finance, land acquisition, permitting and regulatory approvals, environmental and social compliance, and cross-border joint venture arrangements.
