XIV Belgrade Arbitration Conference Sets Stage for XVI Belgrade Open Pre-Moot

On Friday 15 March, the XIV Belgrade Arbitration Conference took place at the Faculty of Law, University of Belgrade. The event, this year held in memory of Prof. Gašo Knežević, is a traditional precursor to the XVI Belgrade Open Pre-Moot. The conference provided a platform for insightful discussions and exchange of ideas among experts in arbitration.

The conference started with opening remarks by the organizers and the words given by Prof. Vladimir Pavić, honouring the legacy of Prof. Knežević.

The first panel delved into the nuances of arbitrators’ qualifications and powers, exploring the convergence of expectations and reality. Legal professionals engaged in thought-provoking discussions, shedding light on key aspects shaping contemporary arbitration practices.

In the second panel, our Partner Milica Savić contributed to a discussion centred on “Counsel, Arbitrators, Courts – Do’s and Don’ts.” She offered insights into the implementation of Art. 16(3) of the UNCITRAL Model Law in the region. Other speakers in the panel included the moderator Venus Valentina Wong from WolfTheiss, Marina Stanisavljević from Schoenherr, Tim Portwood from Bredin Prat, Valentine Chessa from MCL Arbitration, and James Castello, from King & Spalding. who collectively provided diverse perspectives on the subject matter.

Our Senior Partner Milan Lazić moderated the panel dedicated to ICC and DIS Perspectives On New Claims, Consolidation and Mandatory Rules. Alongside colleagues Simon Gabriel, from Gabriel Arbitration, Greg Lourie, from ICC France, Reinmar Wolff, from DIS/University of Marburg, and Eveli Lume, from Squire Patton Boggs, he facilitated an exploration of emerging trends and challenges in arbitration.

As the conference wrapped up, the XVI Belgrade Open Pre-Moot was officially opened, followed by a cocktail event, announcing a busy weekend ahead for all Belgrade arbitration visitors.
