Our colleague Bojana Paneva, Senior Associate at Qoku & Partners in cooperation with Karanović & Partners, was one of the trainers on Day 5 of this year’s BIRN Summer School of Investigative Reporting, held in Ohrid, North Macedonia.
As part of the programme, Bojana delivered a session titled “Reporting Under Legal Pressure: Protecting Investigative Journalists from Legal Risks and Reprisals,” focusing on the legal risks journalists may face when reporting on matters of public interest. Her session covered issues including the protection of journalistic sources and confidentiality, defamation, privacy and data protection, SLAPPs and other forms of legal pressure, as well as practical approaches to assessing and responding to legal risks.
She also provided a practical overview of the legal framework protecting freedom of expression and investigative journalism, with a particular focus on the European Convention on Human Rights, relevant case law of the European Court of Human Rights, and the Macedonian legal context.
The BIRN Summer School brings together investigative journalists and leading experts for an intensive week of training covering investigative reporting, OSINT, data journalism, digital security, fact-checking, environmental journalism and other key aspects of modern investigative journalism.
